A Splash in the Lakes!
On a bright, sunny day, 120 students together with 12 local Businesspeople took part in a day long enterprise activity – ‘Make A Splash’ – at The Seacote Hotel, St Bees, wonderfully situated on the West Cumbrian Coast, on the edge of the breathtaking Lake District National Park.

The students worked in teams of six to create, develop and present plans for new business ideas they came up with themselves at the beginning of the day.

The students - mostly level 2 - were from Carpentry & Joinery, Brickwork, Painting and Decorating, Engineering and Business courses and most had never been through an activity like this before.

The Businesspeople helped the students improve their plans during advisory meetings and later heard the final presentations ‘dragon’s den style’.

The work the students did during the event will go towards their portfolio of evidence to support the achievement of a Wider Key Skill, Working With Others at Level 1.

Lakes College planned this one day pilot programme to develop the enterprise and employability skills of their students and expose them to the world of work.

Said Cyril Wheat, Assistant Principal - External Relations, “Lakes College believes that links with employers are important and view this activity as an essential part of our students programme. The links between learning and work have never been so vital and Make a Splash is the ideal tool to raise student awareness of enterprise and employability."

What did the businesspeople think?
“I fully enjoyed the event. The students performed to a high level in presentations and business plans. I would recommend all businesses to be involved in the future of children via this event.”
John Barany, Managing Director, The Leaning Planet (Cumbria) Ltd

“A hugely enjoyable day. Action packed and well-organised. I felt that I was able to contribute and I will definitely volunteer for other days in the future.”
Annie Weir, Owner Manager, IVITA Learning

“The improvement through the day is quite remarkable and should provide confidence for the future”
Paul Merone, Corporate Finance Senior Manager, Armstrong Watson

“The event was very well organised, the participants were in the main focused and delivered a very high quality series of presentations. I was impressed with the standard of both individual and team - a lot of hard work was required to reach that high a standard in so little time.”Paul McBain, Construction Manager, PPS Electrical Limited

100% of the staff present rated the activity as good or excellent overall.
