Enterprise inspires students at Gateshead ‘Splash’ event
Although the sky looked a bit dark at the start, the 60 students who gathered for a Splash at Gateshead College weren’t worried as they got stuck into their day of enterprising activities.

The event was held in the Bridge Conference Centre at the College and the main room had an inspiring view of the Sage Centre and, over the river, the wonderful architecture that makes up the north bank of the River Tyne.

A Level Academy students from the College were joined by A level business students from Kingsmeadow School who are working in partnership with the College to offer a wider range of opportunities to all the students.

The Splash was an opportunity for the students to develop a business enterprise idea and pitch the idea to real Business Experts.

10 Business Experts from the North East region helped facilitate the day by offering students expert advice to help them refine their ideas.

Students then pitched their business plans to compete for 2 group prizes of £100.00

Pam Hutchinson – Development Manager A Level Academy commented :

“I was absolutely delighted at the success of the 'Ride the Wave Event'. It was great to see the students so engaged in the task and obviously enjoying it too. The element of competition kept them motivated throughout the day.

The Working Knowledge Group provided an excellent learning experience for students. It was well organized and student interest was maintained throughout the day. The Business experts interacted fantastically well with students and they were impressed with the ideas from our A level cohort. Students left the event feeling they had achieved a great deal and they are all keen to do something like this again. An extremely impressive, engaging day.”

Hannah Duncan, A level Business teacher - Kingsmeadow school said “It was a fantastic day, the students really enjoyed it. I hope next year’s Business students can do it also.”

What the students thought of the event...

“It was a great day, very enjoyable. It was useful to talk to Business people and find different ways of completing a task. Good reward at the end, being in the winning team.” Joseph Marriner

“It was really fun and I learned a lot from it. For example how important team work is and that it is very much to do with compromise. I would love to do it again.” Rachel Ferguson
